IOM reports two migrant boats capsized off Yemen; dozens feared dead

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said two boats carrying migrants capsized off the coast of Yemen in Duhab District, Taiz governorate, amid severe weather, the UN spokesperson reported.

IOM said the vessels were making the crossing from the Horn of Africa when they sank in rough seas. Among those on board were at least 24 men and 57 women, the spokesperson said. Two Yemeni crew members were rescued; the remaining passengers and crew were feared dead and no bodies had been recovered at the time of the briefing.

The IOM described the shipwrecks as a reminder of the grave dangers migrants face and said smugglers continue to push people into dangerous journeys despite weather warnings. IOM called for adequate protection and alternatives for migrants.

The spokesperson did not provide a definitive death toll and said bodies had not been recovered at the time of the briefing.
