Hidalgo County Library System reports accreditation, circulation and program growth

Library directors from across Hidalgo County reported to Commissioners Court on July 8 that all 13 county public libraries achieved accreditation from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission for 2024.

Presenters provided systemwide statistics: a combined physical collection exceeding 1,000,000 items and system circulation figures near 800,000 for the year, plus more than 27,000 e‑materials with tens of thousands of e‑circulations. The libraries recorded more than 383,000 public service hours, free computer and Wi‑Fi use counts in the hundreds of thousands, and more than 5,800 public programs with total attendance exceeding 200,000.

Speakers highlighted early‑childhood programming (more than 1,100 sessions with over 57,000 attendees), summer reading and teen programming, and library partnerships that provide GED, citizenship, nutrition and digital‑literacy classes. Palm View Municipal Library staff said the new Palm View facility had been accredited and intends to join the Hidalgo County Library System upon receiving formal notice.

County commissioners thanked presenters and noted the county’s role in supporting rural residents who rely on library services; one commissioner encouraged the library system to submit funding requests for additional county support.
