Council adopts rewritten fire prevention code aligning with Florida Fire Prevention Code

The City Council on Feb. 25 repealed and replaced Chapter 7 (Fire Prevention and Protection) of the Boca Raton Code of Ordinances by adopting Ordinance 57‑26.
Assistant Chief and Fire Marshal Jay Sumner presented the ordinance, explaining the change updates local code to align with the most recent Florida Fire Prevention Code and reorganizes text for clarity. Sumner said the state updates every three years and that local reorganization responds to feedback from businesses, contractors and customers.
The ordinance adds or updates multiple provisions, including requirements to upload fire‑protection system reports to an internet‑based inspection system, expanded premise and unit identification provisions to assist first responders, new sections addressing rubbish and linen chutes, LPG containers and detection requirements for carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in specific occupancies.
“We recommend the adoption of this ordinance,” Sumner said. The council unanimously approved the ordinance on final reading, roll call showing five affirmative votes.
The new chapter is intended to make the city’s fire code easier to use and to ensure enforcement tracks the most current codes and standards adopted at the state level. Departments will implement administrative changes, update inspection procedures, and incorporate the required online reporting system into routine inspections and permitting processes.
