Board approves Sunset Elementary infill and other construction items; votes to authorize bid process

Edmond Public Schools board members approved plans to infill the courtyard at Sunset Elementary, creating two new classrooms (planned as art and music) and remodel two front-entry restrooms, district staff said.

Staff framed the work as primarily a summer construction project intended to minimize disruption: framing and structural work would be erected out of school term, with most cosmetic work completed before the school year starts. Staff said the courtyard infill responds to space needs and will also allow other room reconfigurations within the school.

The board also approved consent-items later in the meeting that affect campus construction budgets. Those approvals included change orders for transportation-site lighting and a guardrail required after site work around the new transportation/fuel site, and the board approved a package of encumbrances and contracts listed on the consent agenda. Staff said one change order reflected work needed after the district purchased an adjacent parcel to expand the transportation site; another covered guardrails near a new detention area adjacent to a fuel pump.

Separately, the board approved moving forward with a districtwide purchase of 600 interactive flat-panel displays as part of the technology bond program. Staff said units previously installed in earlier phases performed as expected and that this purchase would complete the district’s multi-year replacement plan for instructional displays.

The Sunset infill, the change orders and the flat-panel purchase were approved by unanimous votes to authorize design/bid steps or procurement as noted in the agenda.
