Commissioners delay Ridgeway Township clerk appointment after contested recommendations

Ridgeway Township Trustee (presenter) asked the commission to appoint Michael Lawler as township clerk, citing Lawler’s recent service as trustee and his work setting road standards, documenting road work and improving meeting transparency. Several township residents and former board members spoke in opposition, alleging governance problems, concerns about recordkeeping and requests for more time to gather signatures and review documentation. One speaker said he collected roughly 32 petition signatures opposing the appointment; others raised allegations about prior practices in township administration and requested an audit.
Commissioners expressed concern about acting immediately given the contested record and the public testimony. One commissioner said appointing someone who had recently lost a primary election raised fairness questions; other commissioners said the township should be given an opportunity to produce a formal majority recommendation. By consensus the commission agreed to continue the matter and hear it again at the commission’s Feb. 11 meeting so the township board and interested parties could present additional information and the commission could perform due diligence before making an appointment.
Why it matters: township clerk appointments affect local administration of roads, records and township finances. Township officials said the clerk role carries day-to-day operational responsibilities, and residents urged the county to seek more documentation before approving an appointment.
The commission did not make an appointment at the meeting; the item was continued to the Feb. 11 meeting to allow time for the township and interested residents to provide additional evidence and recommendations.
