Orange County marks 200th anniversary with mayoral proclamation and historical program

Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings proclaimed Dec. 29, 2024, as Orange County 200th anniversary day at a public program held at the Orange County Regional History Center in Orlando.

The proclamation and commemorative program Friday included a presentation of colors by county honor guards, a performance of the national anthem by Gabriel Preiser of Opera Orlando, a prayer led by Pastor Chuck Oshwitz of Conway Community Church, a historical reading by Rachel Williams of the Orange County Regional History Center and a short film produced by Orange TV.

"I, Jerry L. Demings, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Orange County Mayor, do hereby proclaim December 29, 2024, as Orange County 200th anniversary day in Orange County, Florida," Mayor Demings read during the program. He also framed the day as an opportunity to both recall the county's past and look ahead: "This milestone is not just a testament to the passage of time, vision, and the spirit that have shaped our community into what it is today."

In his remarks, Demings traced Orange County's origins to its creation as Mosquito County in the territorial era and summarized later name changes and boundary evolutions before the legislature designated the name Orange County in January 1845. He cited historic population figures from early records and noted that the county's population now stands at about 1,500,000 and that the county employs roughly 8,000 people, figures included in the proclamation text read aloud at the event.

Historian Rachel Williams provided a detailed account of the site of the program, the 1927 Orange County Courthouse, describing four successive courthouses on the same site and architectural features of the 1927 building. Williams noted the building's neoclassical revival style, the role of architect Murray S. King and later alterations including a 1960 annex and a 1999 renovation that converted the courthouse into the history center. She also described courtroom artworks and the preservation of a mural from Courtroom A.

The program included a letter from President Joe Biden dated Dec. 29, 2024, that Mayor Demings read to attendees. The mayor closed the program by inviting attendees to a cake-cutting and photo opportunities on the second floor.

Remarks and ceremonial elements were presented for commemoration; no legislative or policy actions were taken during the program.
