Two members of the public addressed the Boulder Police Oversight Panel during the meeting’s public-comment period, criticizing the police department and seeking support for community action.
Lynn Siegel said she does not trust the Boulder Police Department and described past personal grievances and interactions she said undermined confidence in local policing. “I will not call the police if my life depended upon it,” Siegel said, describing a series of incidents she said left her distrustful of department practices and case outcomes.
Zade Atkinson said he has been protesting daily on Pearl Street and Broadway to call attention to racial discrimination by RTD and to rally support for a petition; he said an African American BPD officer helped ensure his protest remained within the law. Atkinson asked panel members to open chat access so he could share a petition link and invited panelists to follow up in a private, non-recorded setting to discuss additional, sensitive details about policing incidents. Panel members offered to receive the materials by email and to follow up offline.
Why it matters: public comments to the panel provide direct community perspectives about trust and safety; both commenters asked the panel to receive further information and to consider community concerns in oversight work.
Ending: panel members directed staff to accept emailed materials and to follow up with the commenters if they wished to provide additional detail in a private meeting.
