Student representative proposes accessible database translating board policies for students

FCPS' student representative delivered a proposal on Oct. 9 to create a student-focused policy database that would translate BoardDocs policies into plain-language summaries and make policy information more accessible to students.
The student representative said many students find board policies long, legalistic and scattered across sections, and that a student-written summary site would help peers understand grading, attendance, discipline and technology-use policies. The proposal calls for topic-grouped summaries, grade-level impact notes, links to original BoardDocs entries for transparency, and a companion social media presence to promote updates and invite feedback.
"When students understand why policy exists and how it works, it builds trust and encourages meaningful engagement," the student representative said, describing plans to partner with the Student Advisory Council and SAC subcommittees to draft content.
The superintendent and board members responded positively and suggested collaboration with communications and IT to ensure accessibility and alignment with division standards. The representative said the project will begin with SAC teams and intends to be sustainable year-to-year by passing the work from one student representative cohort to the next.
