Duval showcases career-technical programs and student awards, highlighting internships and competitions

District staff and students highlighted Duval County’s career and technical education offerings and several student achievements during the June 3 meeting.
The chair and superintendent opened the presentation by describing three CTE clusters — arts/AV technology/communications; marketing/sales/service; and business management/administration — and said 16 schools offer programs in those clusters. Presenters noted many programs provide industry certifications and work-based learning; six high schools partner with VyStar Credit Union to operate campus credit union branches where students can work paid summer internships.
Several students and programs were recognized. Samuel Wolfson students Graham Glasheen and Aaron Zachariah were honored for qualifying for the DECA International Career Development Conference; Aaron was named a silver medallion winner among the top 10 international finalists. The board awarded superintendent’s coins to students and program participants acknowledged that evening.
Jay Laquoir, a student in the Literary Arts Academy at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, described classroom certification opportunities (WordPress and entrepreneurship) and guest-artist workshops that connect students with professional writers. “Whether we are building a product in business entrepreneurship or a website in creative writing, my peers and I are compelled by these programs to always think outside the box,” Jay said.
Ending: Presenters said the district’s CTE program upgrades were supported in part by FLDOE cap grants and local partnerships; staff encouraged families to consult a printed brochure or the district website for program details and summer enrollment information.
