Matter Academy describes experience in Nevada competency‑based learning pilot

Staff from MATTER Academy told the Nevada State Public Charter School Authority on June 18 about their participation in the NDE competency‑based pilot and what they plan to implement across their campuses.
Principal Olivia Carbajal thanked staff and introduced team members who participated in the pilot. Danielle Ranney described the state initiative’s seven competencies—learner agency, assessments, learner supports, mastery, flexible learning paths, equity and standard competencies—and said MATTER Academy used those competencies to develop a school‑specific "portrait of a learner." Instructional coach Alana Jackson said the launch cohort focused on classroom structures and creating student mastery progressions that support flexible learning environments and student voice.
Matter Academy staff described a phased approach: an initial cohort and launch work, focus teams that conducted walkthroughs and artifact collection across three campuses (Bonanza, Mountain Vista and East), then synthesizing findings to prioritize small, actionable changes. They said the pilot helped identify existing strengths and a small number of targeted improvements—rubrics, teacher supports and classroom structures—to scale in year two.
Board members thanked the Matter team for participating and encouraged other charter schools to take part in the pilot when feasible.
