Commission extends Dominion voting-system support contract despite split board vote

Nye County commissioners approved a fourth amendment to the county’s agreement with Dominion Voting Systems on Feb. 19, extending maintenance, software and warranty coverage for the county’s voting systems through Dec. 31, 2033. The measure passed 3–2 after debate about contract length, liability and the county’s alternatives.

The county elections official told the board the contract follows extensive prior evaluation of certified Nevada vendors and that Nevada recognizes only two voting-system vendors for use by counties. During the discussion the clerk said, “The only thing I’m going to say is it’s all in the backup,” and reminded the board that Nevada permits only two certified vendors.

Public comment at the hearing reflected strong views both ways. Supporters urged keeping a certified vendor and maintaining support and training; opponents questioned locking the county into an eight-year extension and argued for shorter terms or letting the contract lapse to test paper-count approaches. Several speakers urged preserved options to cancel if state rules changed.

Commission discussion focused on the trade-off between locking in pricing and preserving flexibility. The clerk and county staff noted contract clauses that allow termination in certain circumstances and that the county had authority under non-appropriation clauses. Still, several commissioners said they would prefer a shorter renewal and more frequent re-evaluation.

The board approved the amendment 3–2. Commissioners voting in favor said continuity and vendor support mattered for election administration; those opposed said the extension was too long and wanted a shorter term to preserve flexibility as election technology and state rules evolve.
