Wakefield rolls out phenomena-based science units, plans multi-year implementation

Wakefield Public Schools curriculum staff told the school committee on Oct. 28 that the district is shifting its science program toward phenomena-based instruction and expects a multi-year implementation timeline.
Joanne Marks, the 5 through 12 science curriculum coordinator, described the department's vision to center instruction on observable, real-world phenomena and to engage students in science and engineering practices throughout units. "That is our guidepost for the work that we're doing," Marks said, adding the district expects to be in a multi-year phase of unit development and implementation.
What teachers are doing: Marks described grade-5 units that begin with high-interest phenomena such as balloon animals dipped in liquid nitrogen and stone gargoyles that weather over time. Lessons use notice/wonder charts, driving question boards and student modeling; students conduct investigations and analyze data as part of building explanations.
Across grades: The department said grade 6 work includes hail formation and nuisance flooding, grade 9 teachers are using and customizing OpenSciEd phenomenon-based materials for biology, and high school offerings expanded this year to include forensics and an honors astronomy course redesigned around phenomena. Elementary staff noted constraints in scheduling (science specialist time is limited at K 4), and the coordinators said they are aligning elementary work with middle-grade expectations where practicable.
Assessment and state tests: Marks noted that DESE is piloting a revised science MCAS and that Wakefield will participate in pilot components; operational results are expected in 2027. The district said the pilot's "storyline" format aligns with the phenomena-based pedagogy but that Wakefield will not receive pilot results until the test is operational.
Next steps: Teachers will continue to develop and refine units, with additional grade-level rollouts planned over the next two to three years and ongoing classroom-level iteration based on teacher feedback.
Why this matters: The approach shifts emphasis from discrete content coverage to student-driven inquiry and practice-based learning, which coordinators said better aligns classroom work with the skills the state is beginning to assess in science.
