Washington County adopts updated hazard mitigation plan required by FEMA

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Texas — Washington County Commissioners Court on Oct. 28 adopted a resolution making the county's updated hazard mitigation plan the official plan, a step needed for final FEMA approval.
Mister Remke of the Washington County Office of Emergency Management told the court the plan is the five‑year update FEMA requires. “It's been preapproved by FEMA, pending adoption by all the jurisdictions,” Remke said, and he listed the jurisdictions that must adopt the document: Washington County, the City of Brenham, the City of Burton and Blinn College.
Remke summarized the plan's process: a committee identified 10 hazards that affect the county; jurisdictions must select at least one mitigation action for each hazard and update demographic and social‑vulnerability information used in FEMA reviews. He told the court the public had two opportunities to comment on the plan and noted the plan may be amended later if jurisdictions identify additional actions.
After the public‑hearing period concluded with no speakers, a commissioner moved to approve the resolution adopting the hazard mitigation plan as Washington County's official mitigation plan; the motion passed by voice vote.
Remke and commissioners emphasized the plan is a living document that can be amended and that county staff will collect the sister jurisdictions' adoption resolutions and send the final assembled package to FEMA for full approval.
