Commission approves ~$68,000 change order to add overhead doors for truck‑storage building

The Covington County Commission on Oct. 21 approved a change order for the county truck‑storage building project to add overhead doors and related structural work, with staff directed to prepare an official amendment for signatures.

Adam Hansen of Banner Associates told the commission the contractor submitted a proposal totaling $69,826.66 for the additional doors and associated work. Hansen described two offsets: a $4,000 credit because existing gravel could be reused instead of removing and replacing material, and approximately $2,188.23 for additional hairpin ties at piers to address outward thrust on the rigid frame. After accounting for those adjustments, Hansen and staff provided a working total of $68,014.66 for the change order.

Hansen said the original contract and the county’s project contingency keep the total project cost below the budgeted amount. “With the extra that we had there, that was something that they wanted to be able to improve the building and for ease of backing in trucks,” he said, explaining the change would allow trucks to face east and reduce maneuvering.

Commissioner Johnson moved to authorize the change order at the estimated amount and Commissioner McElhaney seconded; the motion passed by voice vote. Hansen told commissioners he would prepare the formal change‑order amendment and forward it for signatures.

Why this matters: the change order modifies the storage building’s configuration to improve truck access and aligns with the project budget as presented to commissioners. Staff flagged the item as time sensitive because concrete and weather windows affect scheduling.
