Summary
The Saint Louis Public Schools board approved numerous MOUs and practicums for student‑teacher placements, while staff clarified Grand Canyon University placements, Hazel Health telehealth re‑engagement and a proposed Suzuki integration with Lemp Neighborhood Arts.
At the Oct. 28 work session the board approved blocks of memoranda of understanding and practicum agreements with multiple universities and community partners, including placements from University of Missouri‑Columbia, Lindenwood, Webster, Washington University, Grand Canyon University (GCU), Saint Louis University and others.
Director of Recruitment said GCU is an online program based in Arizona; the district requested an MOU to permit two current district staff who are enrolled in GCU’s online program to complete required student‑teaching/practicum placements locally. The director also provided placement totals: this fall the district had 17 practicum students and 11 full‑time student teachers, and from the prior spring 10 full‑time teacher interns led to 8 full‑time hires.
Student Support Services staff described plans to re‑engage Hazel Health after leadership turnover at that vendor. The district plans retraining for nursing staff, clearer points of contact and a parent‑consent process to allow virtual telehealth visits; staff said the district will provide additional communication and training to ensure stronger use of the service.
Staff also described coordination with the academics team and performing arts curriculum specialists to integrate a Suzuki violin course through Lemp Neighborhood Arts. School selection and whether the program will run during school day or after school will be decided in collaboration with the arts curriculum specialist and the selected school.
Board members asked how many student teachers the district typically hosts; staff replied placements fluctuate by semester and that most student‑teacher practicums are managed semester‑by‑semester and reported in MOUs.
The board approved the consent motions moving numerous practicum and student‑teacher items forward for the regular business meeting or into consent and included the district’s plan to continue these partnerships.
