Elkhart County approves applications for three emergency‑management grants

On Oct. 27 the Elkhart County Board of Commissioners unanimously authorized staff to apply for three emergency‑management grants aimed at staffing, hazardous materials readiness, and exercises.
John Toby, the county's emergency management director, described an Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG) reimbursement award at the highest tier for the county, $75,000, to support office staffing. He also said the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) intends to apply for the Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness (HMEP) grant at $30,000 to fund tabletop exercises with local industry partners, two 40‑hour HAZWOPER classes for industry participants, level A suits for the hazmat team and small clean‑up supplies. Finally, Toby said the county is eligible to apply for a $7,000 EMA reimbursement grant to do a decontamination exercise with the City of Goshen and coordinate training with Elkhart City's HAZMAT team using the county trailer.
Commissioners approved motions granting permission to apply for each grant by unanimous voice vote.
