Elkhart County commissioners on Oct. 27 heard competing bids to clear trees along County Road 17 as part of the phase 1/1B project and voted to let staff review the proposals and bring back a recommendation.
Kyle Wagner of the county highway department said the work is to allow utilities to enter for the County Road 17 expansion. He listed bids ranging from $39,000 to $158,000 from multiple firms, including Brian's Tree Service, Aspen Tree Experts LLC, Ellis Hardwoods LLC, Catcher Tree Service LLC, Payne Services LLC and Bam Tree Service. Wagner said the clearing work is necessary to allow utility access for the project.
A commissioner moved to authorize staff to review the bids and return with a recommendation; the motion carried unanimously.
The board did not award a contract at the meeting and directed staff to evaluate the bids and report back with a recommendation and any clarifying cost or scope details.
