Greene County proclaims August 2025 Child Support Awareness Month

Greene County commissioners unanimously declared August 2025 Child Support Awareness Month following a presentation by Amanda Smith, director of the county Department of Social Services.

Smith told the board that "children are entitled to financial support from their parents" and outlined the statewide scale of child support activity, saying that in state fiscal years 2024 and 2025 "nearly 637,000,000 in child support was collected, providing support for more than 305,000 North Carolina children." Smith asked Chairman Benny Heath to proclaim August 2025 as Child Support Awareness Month in Greene County.

The proclamation recognizes county and state child support staff and urges citizens to observe the month. Commissioners voted to adopt the proclamation after Smith's request; the record shows a motion, a second and a voice vote in which the chair declared "the ayes have it." The county's child support team attended the meeting in support of the presentation.

The proclamation text presented to the board framed child support as a means to meet children's needs for health, education and maintenance and named a range of court and enforcement officials involved in establishing and enforcing child support orders in North Carolina.

No additional funding actions or ordinance changes were proposed as part of the proclamation. The board took the vote during the regular session before moving on to other agenda items and later entering closed session.
