Mecklenburg recognizes drivers during National School Transportation Safety Week; transportation staff give fleet and mileage breakdowns

Mecklenburg County Public Schools recognized its transportation employees during National School Transportation Safety Week at the Oct. 20 board meeting, thanking drivers, monitors and car-route drivers for service and safety.
Miss Moore, speaking for the transportation department, read a list of drivers recognized for perfect attendance and described a range of operational figures: the district operates more than 120 school vehicles (buses and cars), including 68 regular school-route bus drivers (22 of whom are doing double routes daily), and the morning routes total approximately 4,930 miles across the district. She also said 158 buses had been used for extracurricular trips so far this school year and noted staffing levels on sub lists.
Board members and staff praised drivers' day-to-day roles, calling them sometimes the first and last smiling adult some students see each day, and thanked them for safety and dedication.
Transportation staff said they will continue internal awards and recognition events during the school year and asked the community to watch district social media for photos and profiles of drivers.
