The ZAC recommendation approves no change to middle‑ and high‑school boundaries (so students retain their current middle/high feeder path) while moving the Kate Smith Elementary attendance area into the modernized Bernice Matthews site and cleaning up nearby 'island' parcels to align neighborhoods with the nearest campus.
Zimmerman said the committee's choice was partly driven by the facilities modernization plan's multi‑year timeline: some FMP changes (Trainer conversion in later phases) would otherwise cause multiple reassignments for the same families. 'That was a big discussion and a big reason why they chose this option,' she said, noting the goal of reducing repeated disruptions.
Public comment included a request from community member Pablo Nava Duran supporting the move of Kate Smith into Matthews and asking staff to monitor capacity and future implications. The board approved the ZAC recommendation (vote recorded as 6–0 during the meeting) and staff said the changes will take effect for the 2027–28 school year to allow construction at Matthews to finish and families sufficient notice for school‑choice decisions.
