Brawley approves MOU with school district to expand MLS youth soccer program

Chief Jimmy Duran presented a memorandum of understanding with the Brawley Elementary School District to implement an expanded MLS Go youth soccer program during the Nov. 4 council meeting. Duran said the department's youth programs have grown from none five years ago to serving hundreds today and that the MLS partnership helps engage youth and build relationships between officers and students.
Under the MOU the school district will partially fund a second league that will operate within school facilities; the program is scheduled to support about 400 students with the stated long-term goal of further expansion. Duran said the program is supported by volunteer coaches and city staff, and that he has pursued grant funding to bolster youth-violence prevention efforts.
"We do have a great need to bridge that gap with our community and our youth," Duran said, describing juvenile justice statistics that motivated the grant applications and program expansion. He said the police department will act as a service provider to the schools in this partnership.
The council voted to approve the MOU. Staff and partners will coordinate program logistics, volunteer recruitment and funding sources as described in the agreement.
