Brawley council approves updated employee dress code clarifying business casual and safety standards

HR Administrator Sylvia Viscara presented an updated employee dress code policy during the Nov. 4 Brawley City Council meeting, saying the revisions clarify expectations for professional appearance across departments and add safety and enforcement language.
The policy applies to employees who are not required to wear a uniform and defines examples of appropriate business casual, standards for jeans and city-logo wear, and examples of attire considered inappropriate. Viscara said the update also creates a process for departmental exceptions and aligns policy language with existing memoranda of understanding.
"This policy applies to all employees who aren't required to wear a uniform," Viscara said, noting that HR worked with department heads and bargaining units on the draft.
Councilmembers asked only clarifying questions about whether the item was a revision to an existing policy; a motion to approve the policy as presented passed unanimously.
The city will implement the revised policy and HR will coordinate with departments and bargaining units on next steps.
