Sumner County ethics committee removes several complaints from its docket

The Sumner County Commission’s ethics committee voted on Nov. 5 to remove several items from its ethics docket, concluding the matters did not belong before the committee.

Members moved to dismiss two old-business items and one new-business item described in the meeting as items 5A, 5B and 6A. After a motion, a second and brief discussion about procedural form, the committee conducted a roll-call vote and the chair announced the items were dismissed.

Committee members also considered a separate complaint identified as item 6B, described in the meeting as a dispute between an individual named Lawler and the board. A commissioner argued the complaint was a matter between Lawler and the board rather than an ethics matter for the county commission. The committee attorney advised that, based on how the other items had been treated, 6B did not appear to be appropriate for the ethics committee. The committee then voted to dismiss item 6B.

The discussion included procedural points about whether to approve the agenda before considering dismissals and an amendment noting the committee’s policy is intended to address matters involving vendors or material financial impact; speakers said the contested items did not meet that standard. One participant referenced a prior case in which a commissioner was removed from committees for two years as context for the committee’s considerations.

The meeting record shows individual members were polled during roll call; names recorded during votes included Daryl Rogers, Terry Wright, Shannon Bergdorf, Mark Harrison and others, and the chair announced the dismissals were carried. The committee instructed staff to place a report-only item on an upcoming agenda so members can note that no further action was taken, and the chair said a next meeting date will be set.

No ordinance, statute or other legal citation was presented during the discussion.

Speakers named in the meeting included several commissioners; the committee also consulted the county attorney, whose guidance was described but who was not named on the transcript. The invocation at the start of the meeting was offered before the committee took up its business.
