Commissioner Hansen Guest, chair of the Norwalk Fair Rent Commission, opened the Nov. 5 meeting by asking commissioners to refrain from bringing partisan election debate into commission meetings while emphasizing the role the panel can play as housing issues become priorities for the incoming mayor and Common Council.
Guest said he has served on the commission for more than 20 years and praised the panel’s history of nonpartisanship. "We have never been a partisan board," he said, adding that commissioners bring political opinions but should avoid injecting partisan leanings into case deliberations. He noted that affordable housing, fair rents and apartment development are likely to be central topics for the new administration and council.
Guest encouraged commissioners to continue documenting and reporting what they observe in landlord‑tenant cases to city leaders so those officials can consider policy responses. That outreach would be done as commissioners acting in their capacity on the commission, not as a partisan caucus.
The chair’s remarks were procedural and advisory; no formal action was taken on policy, and commissioners did not vote on new guidance.
