Planning commission backs Kershaw annexation, recommends R-18 zoning to city council

The Sandy City Planning Commission voted to recommend that the City Council approve the annexation sponsored by Janice Kershaw and zone the property R-18.
Brian McHouston, assistant community development director, told commissioners the annexation covers just under 9 acres near 1350 East and 1380 East and includes approximately 24 homes; 16 property owners (about 67%) signed consent forms. McHouston said the area is currently zoned R-18 in the county and staff proposed matching that zone in Sandy City.
Janice Kershaw, the applicant, said she has lived at 9512 South 1380 East for nearly 52 years and that she was not aware of opposition among neighbors. “I really didn't have any opposition that I'm aware of for this,” Kershaw said for the record.
There was no public testimony opposing the annexation. After brief discussion, a commissioner moved to recommend approval to the City Council; the motion was seconded and passed by voice vote.
The commission’s action was a recommendation to the City Council; final annexation and zoning approval will occur at a future council hearing.
