Recreation events, park construction and security upgrades highlighted in Prosper parks update

Staff updated the Parks and Recreation Board on upcoming events (Fishing Derby Feb. 27; Mayor's Fitness Challenge registration March 1; P-Town Throwdown pickleball March 29), staffing promotions, Vernon Park construction, erosion-control work at Frontier Park and plans for added security cameras and equipment procurement.
Recreation and park staff briefed the Prosper Parks and Recreation Board on Feb. 13 about upcoming programs, staffing changes and park projects, and outlined plans for security camera expansion and equipment updates.
Recreation staff said the Prosper Fishing Derby is scheduled for Feb. 27 from 9–11 a.m. at the pond at Frontier Park. Trevor Hilton, a recreation staff member, described the event as a “free event for families,” and said staff expect between 250 and 500 participants depending on weather; he also reported approximately 2,000 rainbow trout and catfish are being stocked for the event.
Hilton also previewed the spring Mayor’s Fitness Challenge, with registration opening March 1 for the spring season, and noted the town will again compete in a steps-focused challenge with Little Elm. Spring camps, a new tennis instructor arrangement (Cando Racket Sports replacing Gravett Management) and additional program locations at Reynolds and Rushing middle schools were also announced. Hilton reported Brandon Kettler was promoted from recreation attendant to recreation specialist and began the position the week prior; Alyssa Boyd moved into a part-time recreation attendant role.
Staff announced the P-Town Throwdown pickleball tournament is set for March 29 at Reynolds Middle School; staff expect divisions to wrap up by mid- to late afternoon depending on registration.
On park development, Kurtz Billharts provided construction updates: Vernon Park restroom and concession building is roughly 40–50% complete, irrigation is in place and subgrade work for pickleball and tennis courts is underway; a bridge for the hike-and-bike trail has been ordered. At Frontier Park, staff installed a concrete “bag wall” to protect a pond bank from erosion and said sod delivery is scheduled before the fishing derby to restore the shoreline.
Board members asked about security after recent vandalism; staff said they are meeting with the IT director about permanent solutions and are already adding Flock mobile cameras at Frontier and other parks to help identify vehicles and suspects when incidents occur.
Matt Furr of parks operations said crews are addressing storm-related debris at Whitley Place, coordinating with public works on culvert and drainage issues, and engaging community volunteer groups for trail cleanup. Operations staff are also soliciting quotes for equipment replacement and evaluating a return to reel-type mowers because of improved cut quality for athletic turf.
Staff reminded the board the next Parks Board meeting is tentatively scheduled for March 13 and invited members to attend upcoming council consideration of the open space master plan.
