Giddings ISD reports mixed preliminary STAAR results, summer programs and campus maintenance work

GIDDINGS, Texas — District staff updated trustees June 19 on academic performance, summer programs and facilities work as administrators prepare campuses for the 2025–26 school year.
Assistant Superintendent Shane Holman reported preliminary STAAR results showing GISD improved or maintained performance in roughly half of the assessed performance areas and that the district exceeded state performance in half of the categories. Holman said English language arts and reading (ELAR) demonstrated the largest year‑over‑year improvement and that science continues to be a district strength.
Assistant Superintendent Andy Masek gave the facilities report and said maintenance, transportation and technology teams are working through summer projects. IT staff are refurbishing and updating classroom technology; transportation crews are cleaning and preparing buses and vehicles; maintenance is performing preventative upkeep across campuses; campus floor waxing and grounds mowing are underway. Masek also reviewed a list of future projects included in the board packet.
IT Director Art Hernandez was not present but the packet included a technology overview for trustees.
Superintendent Dr. Ray DeSpain said summer school has proceeded smoothly and reported strong participation in the district's SWAP program, with approximately 100 boys and 45 girls attending. DeSpain also provided a brief legislative-session update and noted a pending land-sale matter mentioned in the packet; the minutes do not include further details about the land sale.
