Commissioners discuss adding code officers and swapping 2WD truck for 4x4

Meriwether County commissioners spent part of the Aug. 11 work session reviewing a request from code enforcement to upgrade the department's vehicle and to budget for additional officers.

The department head told the board the FY2026 budget will look similar to last year's but asked to replace a two-wheel-drive truck with a four-wheel-drive vehicle on safety and operational grounds. The head also asked that the board consider budgeting for one or more additional code-enforcement officers so staffing would be available if the board approves expansion later in the year.

Commissioners debated timing for hiring and policy needs. One commissioner said the previously discussed six- to 12-month planning window for a rolling code-enforcement program was too vague and asked staff to return with clearer timelines and estimated costs. Vice Chairman Collins and staff noted an option to rotate older sheriff vehicles into service and re-paint or re-vinyl them white so they're not mistaken for sheriff patrol cars, which could reduce upfront vehicle purchases.

Board members asked staff to provide: an itemized cost estimate for a 4x4 replacement; the incremental payroll and benefit cost to add one or more officers; and any required policy or ordinance changes needed to expand active enforcement. Commissioners also asked the county attorney and sheriff to advise whether a post-certified (law-enforcement certified) code officer would require sheriff authorization to carry firearms or issue certain citations.

No formal budget line was approved at the work session; commissioners directed staff to prepare numbers and legal guidance before the September public-notice and adoption schedule.
