Technology Director Mr. Souza briefed the board on multiple technology and data‑security items, including a Chromebook pilot, upcoming E‑Rate projects, a parent communication platform review and the district’s response to a PowerSchool data breach.
Souza said the first‑grade Chromebook pilot has been successful across pilot buildings and staff expect to bring an adoption action item in February if pricing remains stable. He cautioned that vendor quotes have included short price‑hold windows due to potential international tariffs, so procurement timing is a priority.
On E‑Rate, Souza reported planned projects—firewall upgrades and cabling at Jones Elementary—appear within projected costs and are eligible for up to 50% reimbursement under E‑Rate rules. He said staff recommend proceeding even if federal support changes, because the security and infrastructure upgrades are recommended.
The district is evaluating parent communication platforms to reduce duplication of apps and improve the clarity and personalization of family communication. A small stakeholder group has narrowed vendor options and a larger round of stakeholder review is planned.
Souza described the district’s outreach related to a national PowerSchool data breach that affected many districts: the vendor has said it will offer two years of Experian credit‑monitoring for affected individuals. The district is contacting current families and staff and attempting to reach former students and employees for whom contact information is incomplete; Souza reported no evidence yet that the breached data has been sold but said outreach and monitoring remain priorities.
Board members asked about vendor liability and notification mechanics; staff said they are awaiting formal materials from PowerSchool but will post updates and notify families when the Experian enrollment process is available.
