Board recognizes staff and students; BASA showcases programs and enrollment plans
Summary
Administrators and the board recognized a broad set of staff and students for service and competition results, and Barrow Arts & Sciences Academy presented its vision, pathways and enrollment plans.
The board opened the meeting with a series of recognitions highlighting staff and student achievements across the district.
Joe Purno and Dr. Jennifer Wood led recognitions including Jimmy Castro of Sims Academy as Custodian of the Month and several transportation employees honored for exemplary customer service. Dr. Wood and other administrators recognized numerous Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) winners from SkillsUSA, TSA, FCCLA and FFA: students placed at state and national levels in categories including transportation modeling, architectural design, structural engineering and agriscience; Apalachee, Winder-Barrow and Hayman Morris programs and advisors were named.
Two students were introduced as selections to the state superintendent student advisory council: Natalie Griffith (Apalachee High School) and Damien (Damian) Alvarado (Barrow Arts & Sciences Academy). Principals described their leadership, community service and extracurricular engagement and praised them for representing their schools at the state level.
The board also recognized Nicole Vallis, director of communications, as the Marie Wofford School Communicator of the Year by the Georgia School Public Relations Association.
Following recognitions, BASA principal Tommy Threlkeill and Washina Lyles delivered a school spotlight presentation outlining the school's vision of "Respect for all," mission and purpose, career pathways (agriculture, IT, graphic design, health sciences, marketing, environmental science and others), collaborative projects (including a student-created fragrance and partnerships with Northeast Georgia Medical Center) and upcoming events: a Veterans Day program on Nov. 11 at 10:30 a.m., a parent open house on Nov. 10 and a student enrollment window beginning Nov. 10. They played a student'created enrollment video and summarized their "fire chats" initiative to increase intentional, small-group academic conversations.
No formal board action was required on recognitions or the spotlight.
