Board highlights foundation, Rotary and county support for projects and student programs

Board members used their reports to highlight recent philanthropic and intergovernmental support for district projects and student programs.

A board member reported that the district foundation provided nearly $25,000 this year to support the Energy and Marine Center and that the foundation's supply center distributed nearly $245,000 in free supplies to roughly 1,600 teachers across 97 schools. The foundation also awarded a record $428,000 in scholarships to nearly 200 graduating seniors and provided $155,000 in additional support to other graduating students.

Separately, board members thanked Pasco County staff and local elected officials for securing sidewalk funding, including $1.5 million for the Curley Road Safer Walkways project; the board said nearly $4 million in sidewalk funding has been secured over the past three years through county and state efforts. A Rotary Club district grant of $10,000 was announced to support an ecological student project at Durney Key, including materials, picnic tables and signage to document student work on oyster beds and invasive species removal.

The board also discussed capital procurement activity: staff are evaluating architect submissions in response to RFQs for a West Zephyr Hills Elementary interior remodel (approximately 30 square feet noted in the meeting) and a Kirkland Ranch K-8 classroom addition of 20 classrooms. Committees will interview top architects later in the month.
