Board names Lance Coleman inspector general after nationwide search

The Texas Board of Criminal Justice appointed Lance Coleman as inspector general on Dec. 13, following a nationwide recruitment and interview process convened by the board—s Correctional Law Enforcement Committee.

Committee chair Tom Fordyce said the position was advertised across multiple platforms from Sept. 18 through Oct. 18, 2024, and that the search generated a large and geographically diverse applicant pool. Human Resources performed an initial screening and the committee invited eight candidates for interviews. After deliberations, the committee made a unanimous recommendation.

"After careful, deliberate deliberation, we reached a unanimous decision and selected the candidate we believe is the most qualified to lead this critical position," Fordyce said as he presented the committee—s recommendation.

The board approved the appointment by motion and voice vote. Lance Coleman thanked the board and said he looks forward to leading the Office of Inspector General and to working with the agency—s leadership team.

Why it matters: The inspector general oversees criminal investigations and compliance work that affect TDCJ operations statewide, including strike‑force efforts to interdict contraband and other activities that affect public safety.

Outgoing Inspector General Chris Love, who was recognized earlier in the meeting for decades of service, was publicly thanked by board members; board members and staff stressed the OIG—s role in task forces and multi‑agency partnerships.

The appointment is effective Dec. 15, 2024.
