The LaPorte County Council on Oct. 27 considered and approved multiple permission'to'hire requests from county departments during the meeting''s personnel segment.
Highlights of approvals include: - Building maintenance: permission to hire a full'time janitor to restore staffing to six full'time and two part'time positions in the maintenance group. - Auditor's office: permission to fill a full'time tax'sale clerk to support year'round tax'sale and reconciling responsibilities; the auditor said the position helps reconcile large cash flows and GAAP reporting requirements. - County Highway: permission to fill a clerk/receptionist position to handle complaint calls, timekeeping entries and daily office operations. - HR: permission to hire a full'time HR assistant to support onboarding and training for approximately 700 employees under HR's purview. - Clerk'of'court/circuit: permission to backfill a criminal desk clerk; the clerk'of'court emphasized that criminal processing is specialized and requires full'time coverage to avoid court case errors.
A request from the county treasurer for a bookkeeping replacement initially failed for lack of a second; after liaison discussion and assurances about tracking Michigan City office foot traffic the council later approved a motion to fill the position. The council asked the treasurer to collect and report spring'collection counter statistics to inform whether the Michigan City office should remain open or be consolidated.
Councilmembers repeatedly asked whether any of the roles could be done part time; department heads stated that, for several positions (tax'sale clerk, criminal desk, primary reception), continuous weekday coverage and cross'training needs make full'time appointments preferable. Several council members requested ongoing monitoring of 100'series (payroll) accounts as hiring proceeds.
