The Fall River City Instructional Subcommittee voted to refer a draft Derby High School CTE admissions policy to the full committee and received an update on the districts instructional priorities, which emphasize support for students with disabilities and multilingual learners.
Administration summarized the Derby CTE policy updates, including the new admissions framework the state requires (the lottery options) and the two-stage pipeline: a ninth-grade exploratory discovery year and subsequent program placement that uses recommendation, attendance, academics and conduct. Staff also described co-op and credentialing options: students in some pathways may leave with state-recognized micro-credentials or industry-recognized certifications (examples cited: CNA in health assisting and state cosmetology board exams for cosmetology students) and noted state minimum hours for vocational pathways (900 hours as a baseline).
Committee members asked about transfer students coming from other regional vocational programs and whether the district can recognize prior CTE enrollment; staff said transfer students are encouraged to apply and, when space exists, will be admitted or placed on a wait list for the requested program. Administration also described co-op coordination and named a staff member involved in placements.
On district instructional priorities, staff said the years priority elevates inclusive practices and targeted supports: central office staff are working alongside building leaders in identified schools, offering professional development on curriculum scaffolding, clarifying roles and monitoring implementation through benchmarks and scheduled reviews. "Weve been intentional about pushing central office support into schools to work alongside building leaders and teams," a staff presenter said, noting monthly visits from DESE support partners and specific monitoring milestones.
The subcommittee moved and seconded to refer the Derby CTE policy draft to the full committee. The roll-call vote recorded named responses (examples in the transcript include recorded votes by Mister Dyes and Mister Court; transcript shows some members voting yes while at least one vote was recorded as no). Staff said a Friday memo and the full-committee docket will include a copy of the draft policy and supporting documentation.
Whats next: The Derby CTE draft and the districts instructional-priorities documentation will go to the full committee; staff will provide backup materials, benchmarks and a memo to committee members before the full-committee meeting.
