District to place Policy 7255 (Article 26a) on next consent agenda to support students who are parents or victims of domestic violence
Summary
District staff presented Policy 7255, aligning district procedures with Article 26a of the School Code to provide supports for students who are parents, expectant parents or victims of domestic violence.
West Aurora School District 129 staff presented Policy 7255 to the board on Oct. 6; the policy is intended to align district procedures with Article 26a of the Illinois School Code (the ensuring success in school law) to support students who are parents, expectant parents or victims of domestic violence.
Executive Director of Student and Family Supports (presenter) summarized the policy's main requirements: annual communication of policy and procedures to students, designation and training of a 26a resource person in each building, staff training modules already in place, provision of supportive services and community referrals, and a complaint resolution process that preserves confidentiality and documentation. The presenter said much of the work to comply with the law is already underway. "This law recognizes that students who are parents, expected parents, or victims of domestic ... might face significant barriers to learning or meeting graduation requirements," the presenter said.
Board members asked clarifying questions about whether a 26a resource person is required in every building; the presenter confirmed it is required for each building. Staff told the board they intend to place Policy 7255 on the consent agenda for the next regular meeting so board members may vote to adopt it.
