The Board of Education approved the purchase of a home at 134 South Glenwood Place for $300,000 to create additional staff parking for Freeman Elementary. District staff said the house would be removed in spring and the parking lot constructed the following summer; formal approval for the construction project will be brought separately.
The West Aurora School District 129 Board of Education on Oct. 6 approved a resolution to buy the residential property at 134 South Glenwood Place for $300,000 to create staff parking for Freeman Elementary.
Board President Kearns moved the resolution, and the motion passed on a roll call vote. The secretary recorded ayes from Missus Lorenz, Missus Saperstein, Mister Lathan, Missus Stone, Miss Garcia, Missus Jones and President Kearns.
Associate Superintendent Dr. Angie Smith told the board the Freeman Elementary site lacks enough staff parking and the district had an opportunity to purchase the house directly north of the existing lot. "The plan would then be to, in the summer next year, to install a parking lot with the hopes of being able to get the vast majority of our staff, if not all, off of streets and into actual parking lot," she said. Smith said the district expects to demolish the house in spring and return with the specific construction project and budget for board approval.
The district did not provide a timeline for when the parking lot would open to staff, beyond the general plan to demolish the structure in spring and construct the lot the following summer. No legal or zoning citations were cited during the discussion. The board recorded no no votes or abstentions on the motion.
