The Grosse Ile Public Services Commission voted on Nov. 11 to recommend the township board approve the purchase and installation of a refurbished gearbox for the wastewater plant’s lime slurry mixer, with a total cost reported at $24,685.01 including labor.
Ryan explained the mixer gearbox is 15–20 years old, runs 24 hours per day, and has developed a wobble and oil leaks. He presented three vendor options in the packet: a refurbished gearbox with warranty (option 1), a new gearbox (option 2, higher cost) and a full new unit (option 3, more labor intensive). "The blade looks good and the motor will fit the refurbished unit," Ryan said, describing why staff favored option 1.
Commissioners probed labor and travel costs, lead times (vendor estimated delivery windows of 3–4 weeks for replacement options), and potential additional costs if concrete slabs must be removed for full unit replacement. Staff noted vendor’s refurbished option includes installation labor in the total quoted price; commissioners asked staff to ensure vendor’s labor scope is clear in writing.
A motion to proceed with the refurbished gearbox (total cost $24,685.01 including labor) was moved, supported and approved by voice vote. Staff said the part carries a warranty and that the motor spare was ordered as a precaution.
Next steps: staff will finalize vendor paperwork, confirm warranty terms and schedule installation.
