Valley County commissioners voted to authorize staff to apply for the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) FY26 traffic enforcement grant program, which reimburses agencies for overtime associated with targeted mobilizations on impaired driving and other road-safety efforts.
Ken, the county staff member presenting the item, said the program lets law enforcement expand enforcement during high-incidence periods and can partially cover equipment purchases. "Last year, we're able to recover about $35,000 worth of overtime," Ken said, and he added the grant helped the county buy eight new breathalyzer machines. He clarified the funds are administered through ITD rather than directly as a law enforcement appropriation.
Commissioner 2 moved to approve authorization to apply for the traffic enforcement grant; Commissioner 1 seconded. The board approved the motion by voice vote.
The authorization covered the county's submission of required certifications and the application; it does not obligate final award acceptance. Staff signaled the grant is a recurring opportunity the county will continue to pursue where appropriate and that equipment and overtime reimbursements are among the county's typical uses of the funding.
