Lakewood board approves superintendent—s facility recommendation to repurpose Lincoln as district early-learning center after heated public comment

The Lakewood City Board of Education voted Oct. 20 to adopt the superintendent—s Oct. 6 elementary facility recommendation, a plan that would repurpose Lincoln Elementary as a centralized early learning center and reconfigure several elementary programs across the district. The board approved the resolution after an extended public-comment period in which more than 50 residents, parents and educators urged either a pause or a change of course.

Superintendent Niedzwiecki presented the recommendation and introduced district staff who outlined why the administration is proposing a consolidated preschool site. Mr. Oss, director of teaching and learning, told the board that early childhood education is a critical window — he cited research on early brain development and said high-quality preschool can improve kindergarten readiness, social-emotional skills and longer-term academic outcomes.
