Lakewood Board approves superintendent recommendation to repurpose Lincoln Elementary into centralized early‑learning center

The Lakewood Board of Education on Oct. 20 approved a resolution adopting the superintendent’s Oct. 6 elementary facility recommendation, which includes repurposing Lincoln Elementary as a centralized early‑learning (pre‑K) center. The motion was moved, seconded and carried after discussion; an amendment to separate the CHAMPS program was proposed but not seconded and did not advance.

The superintendent, who presented the recommendation at the meeting, framed the proposal around educational and operational goals. Mr. Oss, the district’s director of teaching and learning, emphasized the developmental research behind early learning, saying one of the most critical stages "is that first 2,000 days" when “85% of brain growth and development takes place,” and argued that high‑quality preschool improves later reading, social skills and long‑term outcomes.
