Jackson County Legislature declines to approve surplus declaration for Independence Square parcel
The legislature voted 4–5 on Resolution 21983 to declare certain county real property surplus (including Independence Square), resulting in the resolution failing after administration explained no imminent plans and the property would be offered competitively if approved.

Administrators told the Jackson County Legislature on Aug. 25 that two resolutions seeking to declare county parcels surplus — including properties at Independence Square and a parcel south of Lakewood — were intended to start a competitive disposal process and would return to the legislature for final approval.
