Facilities chief says temporary AC arriving as district finalizes start-of-school preparations

Highlands County School District facilities staff told the school board on Aug. 18 that scattered air‑conditioning failures and portable‑building issues are being addressed ahead of the start of the school year.
Frank Brown, who provided the facilities update, said about four portables are affected districtwide and described Woodlawn as the most significant problem because of a failed compressor. ‘‘There is in play a 30 ton temp unit coming tomorrow… it sort of buys us a month,’’ Brown said, describing the temporary shipment from outside the region and a plan to replace or retrofit the older compressor next summer.
Board members thanked facilities staff for weekend and summer work to ready schools, noting painting and portable moves at several campuses, including Lake Placid and Sebring Middle School. John Verdi, safety and security, reported the Office of Safe Schools quarterly compliance submission for April–June listed zero sites inspected and zero findings; he said the district will continue to present that required report each quarter.
Superintendent Dr. Martin also reminded the board that a special meeting is scheduled for Sept. 3 at 1:30 p.m. to review hardship out‑of‑zone transfer appeals and that open houses begin immediately. The board encouraged continued monitoring of cooling and staffing needs as students return.
