Marion County board approves district-managed turnaround plan for Oak Crest Elementary

The Marion County School Board on Sept. 9 approved a district-managed Step One turnaround plan for Oak Crest Elementary after reviewing a multi-point strategy intended to reverse consecutive D grades.
Area Superintendent Lamar Rembert told the board the plan was built from a comprehensive review of school performance data disaggregated by subject, grade level and subgroup. He said the plan’s highlights include appointing Sarah Dobbs as school leader, staffing the school with experienced, certified instructors (including 16 reading-endorsed teachers), ongoing progress monitoring using local and state assessments, weekly central-office data reviews to produce action plans, and at least twice-monthly support from the Bureau of School Improvement.
“There are already signs of early success,” Rembert said, noting Oak Crest’s daily average attendance is "hovering around 95%" and describing an attendance response committee composed of business partners, community outreach and district and school-based members.
Board members praised the initial results but urged sustained support. One member said low parent turnout at a recent community meeting could be read two ways but emphasized confidence in Principal Dobbs’ leadership. Interim Superintendent Dr. Danielle Brewer confirmed that, if approved, she will present the targeted improvement plan to the State Board of Education on Sept. 24, 2025.
The board voted unanimously to approve the plan. The motion passed 4-0.
What happens next: With the board’s approval, district staff will implement the outlined staffing, monitoring and coaching steps and report progress through the established monthly and weekly review cycles.
