Board unanimously approves three school naming recommendations

The CCSD Board approved three name changes: the Healing Center School will become the Amy Ayoub Academy of Hope, Charles I. West Hall Preparatory Institute will become Dr. Charles I. West Preparatory Academy, and Building 2 of the Dr. Beth Howe Center will be named for Yvette Wintermute.
Trustees unanimously approved three naming recommendations at the Aug. 14 meeting.
Kirsten Cyr, chief community engagement officer, presented the recommendations from the school naming committee. The Healing Center School at St. Jude's Ranch for Children will be renamed the Amy Ayoub Academy of Hope. Principal Amy Manning and St. Jude's CEO Christina Vela described the school's trauma'informed work with trafficking survivors and said naming the school for Amy Ayoub honors her advocacy and survivor leadership. Trustee Stephens moved and Trustee Cavazos seconded; the motion passed 7'0to'00.
The board also approved renaming the School for Academic Excellence at Charles I. West Hall Preparatory Institute to the Dr. Charles I. West Preparatory Academy to better foreground Dr. West's professional title and legacy. Student speakers and principals urged support; Trustee Henry moved the measure and Trustee Baron seconded; the vote was 7'0to' 0 in favor.
Finally, the board approved naming Building 2 of the Dr. Beth Howe Center for Yvette Wintermute, a longtime CCSD nurse and chief nurse who died in 2020. Chief nurse Sherry McPartland and colleagues testified about Wintermute's pandemic-era leadership and longstanding service. Trustee Esparza moved the action and Trustee Biasotti seconded; the board voted 7'0to' 0 to approve the dedication.
Trustees praised the honorees and thanked staff for the naming committee work. All three measures were approved as presented.
