Bradenton to buy 11.3 acres from housing authority to secure City Park footprint, council says

The Bradenton City Council voted Nov. 12 to authorize the mayor to execute a purchase and sale agreement to acquire 11.3 acres now owned by the Bradenton Housing Authority for $1,350,000, city staff said.
Mister Perry told council the parcel — acquired in recent years under a long‑term lease arrangement arising from a Telesis partnership and successor interests — will provide the land necessary for the Powell building and the City Park footprint. He outlined a complex, "trifurcated" transaction that involved estate administration, HUD approvals and a successor partner referenced in the memo as Wingate.
Perry and councilmembers said the purchase is intended to anchor broader neighborhood reinvestment in the Rogers Gardens/Braden Village area and to support related efforts by the HUD‑funded housing authority, including RAD projects and other improvements. The city will assume fee ownership after the housing authority board and HUD approvals, staff said.
Councilmember Coachman, who has worked closely with community leaders on neighborhood revitalization, described the purchase as a generational investment that will allow the city and partner agencies to deliver a community center, programming and supportive services alongside park amenities.
The council voted unanimously to approve the purchase and authorize the mayor to sign the agreement, subject to closing conditions and HUD review.
