Elkhart approves firefighter cancer screenings; 9-1-1 center reports staffing shortfalls; building reports accepted

Elkhart’s Board of Public Safety approved a diagnostic agreement Oct. 14 to provide cancer screenings for the fire department and received updates on the 9-1-1 center and building operations.
Christy Summer, assistant chief of the Elkhart Fire Department, told the board the department will contract for cancer screenings this year to cover the remaining half of personnel not screened previously. She said the screenings cost $335 per participant and target firefighters with more than three years of service because of cumulative carcinogen exposure; the board approved the agreement by unanimous vote.
Dustin McLean of the 9-1-1 center reported staffing challenges: the center is three dispatchers short and has an open training coordinator position; HR will post the openings publicly. The board took no immediate staffing action beyond the informational update.
Tim Visteen, city building commissioner, presented the September building and code enforcement monthly reports; the board voted to accept and place those reports on file. The board also approved a memo to take action on four addresses (1801 Sterling Ave., 1136 Canton St., 1133 S. Michigan St., 1711 Cohass Ave.) related to code enforcement and tabled further action on 1253 Columbian Ave. Subsequent demolition contract awards for three other addresses were approved separately earlier in the meeting.
The meeting recorded no public comments on these items and adjourned after routine business.
