Aurora staff to roll out initial housing UDO code drafts in mid‑December

City planners told the Planning and Economic Development Committee on Nov. 12 that staff aim to release initial drafts of zoning code amendments addressing small-lot and compact housing by mid‑December.
Brandon Cammarata, manager in Current Planning and project manager for the housing UDO update, said the work responds to market interest beyond the eastern E‑470 area where small-lot housing was first permitted in 2019. He said staff are developing code in three focus areas — greenfield (largely undeveloped areas), infill (western corridors) and design standards (for masonry, parking, and materials) — and that visuals and developer roundtables are planned to help explain implementation.
"We're working full on in developing code in hopes of being able to roll out some initial drafts, mid-December," Cammarata said. He added that staff have conducted a code audit, held engagement with the development community and received general affirmation from committee and council to continue the work.
Council members asked for visual examples of configurations and noted the project's role in widening housing product types and price points. Staff said they will coordinate with the council sponsor during the next steps and hold additional outreach with developers.
