Mesa View students pitch Beanstack reading program to trustees

Principal Isis Ortiz and a team of students presented Mesa View Middle School’s literacy program to the Ocean View School District board on Oct. 28.
Ortiz said the library operates as a student-centered hub with extended open hours and a volunteer library‑helper program led by the librarian (Miss Miller). Students Lauren Lee, Wyatt Combs and Elkin described leadership and organizational skills gained by shelving books and managing the space. The students also promoted the school’s Beanstack goal — a schoolwide target of 1,000,000 logged minutes of reading by May, with an incentive the students called out as principals being silly‑stringed if the goal is met.
Trustees congratulated the students and principal and asked whether Beanstack is optional; students and principal clarified the app is available through Clever and incentivized by teachers and library activities. Trustees commended the initiative and said they would welcome reports on districtwide adoption and a May update if the goal is met.
No board action was required; the presentation was informational and drew positive comment from trustees.
