Board ratifies tentative MEDEA contract; district and union praise negotiators

The Mount Diablo Unified School District Board of Education on Nov. 12 approved a tentative agreement between the district and the Mount Diablo Education Association (MEDEA).
MEDEA President Linda Ortega told the board that MEDEA members had voted to ratify the tentative contract, thanked bargaining and organizing teams and said the union will continue negotiating to incorporate adult educators and remaining items: “I am pleased to report that the Mount Diablo Education Association, MEDEA, members have voted to ratify the tentative agreement,” Ortega said.
District negotiator Brian Sheehy presented the district’s view of the agreement and trustees moved to adopt the tentative contract during the consent/agenda business; Trustee Nzewi moved to approve and Trustee Mason seconded. The vote was 5‑0. Trustees and district leadership publicly thanked negotiators on both sides for the hours spent reaching the settlement.
Outside of the vote, a public commenter and union member, Brett Andrew Haupt, welcomed the tentative agreement but criticized the bargaining process as adversarial and urged trustees to empower leadership to start with fair offers and focus on special education and specialists’ needs. That public comment and Ortega’s remarks were cited in subsequent trustee remarks of appreciation and in Superintendent Clark’s comments about ongoing work. The board also received initial (“sunshine”) proposals for including adult education instructors in future bargaining and approved filing and accepting those proposals for negotiations.
The agreement approved by the board covers the parties’ stated contract period (as presented to the board) and district staff said the item would move forward per standard administrative processes for implementation.
