Students and staff gave the Kennewick board a series of firsthand accounts of highly capable services and CTE programs, highlighting academic challenge, hands‑on learning and pathways to college and careers.
During a highly capable spotlight, Connor Crotty, a fifth grader at Vista Elementary, said COG "allows kids to stay with their peer group while taking harder classes" and praised project work and teacher support. Macy, a ninth grader at Kennewick High School, said early highly capable classes gave her a foundation that made algebra and honors classes more accessible: "Its this growth inspired in high cap and developed from then on that has made honors courses . . . worth it for me."
In the CTE portion, senior Jeffrey (Kennewick High) described learning CAD, 3‑D printing and robotics. He said the robotics team advanced from no experience to world finalist competition in Houston and that an application he wrote became a Congressional App Challenge finalist for Eastern Washington. Jasmine Connor, a senior involved in FFA and agriculture classes, said the program taught welding, fabrication, leadership and certifications (first aid/CPR) that she used to help save a life. Tradan Lopez described DECA, marketing coursework and receiving internship offers, and Lily Johansen (Teaching Academy alum) outlined the Teaching Bridge program with WSU Tri‑Cities that lets students work as substitute paraeducators while finishing a teaching degree.
Presenters said these programs provide real‑world certifications, internships and connections with employers such as Energy Northwest and with postsecondary partners. Board members thanked students and staff and noted the programs contribute to the district's mission to prepare students for varied postsecondary paths.
